Antimonde.

Le monde de la géographie fran aise a récemment vu ressurgir une notion vieille de deux décennies et peu usitée, celle d’antimonde. Pour Roger Brunet, son créateur, l’antimonde est cette partie du Monde mal connue et qui tient à le rester, qui se présente à la fois comme le négatif du monde et comme son double indispensable . Le terme fait certes figure de paradoxe pour la géographie puisque celle-ci a justement le monde et ses réalités pour objet d’étude et non son contraire supposé ou ce qui lui serait opposé. Mais la notion souffre avant tout d’une définition pour le moins vague qui la rend non opératoire pour décrire les réalités sociales, politiques, économiques et bien s r spatiales qu’elle prétend désigner. En recourant à la modélisation de l’espace afin d’en déchiffrer l’extrême complexité et d’identifier les causes et les logiques qui participent de cette complexité, Brunet simplifie le monde à outrance. Ainsi, le problème principal posé par la notion d’antimonde réside dans l’écart qui la sépare de la réalité qu’elle entend désigner et dans ce qu’elle implique en termes de représentation et de compréhension du monde dans ce qu’il a à priori de plus répréhensible ou de plus marginal. Loin d’avoir été définie de manière satisfaisante et convaincante, la notion d’antimonde n’a pas non plus été abordée ou évaluée par son auteur au regard d’autres notions qui auraient pourtant pu aider à sa construction. In fine, l’antimonde n’est-il pas davantage la terra incognita de la géographie que celle du monde ? Recently, antimonde (“antiworld”) a rarely used twenty-year-old notion has reemerged in the world of French geography. Roger Brunet, who first resorted to the notion within that discipline, defines it as “this part of the World that is ill-known and wishes to remain that way, which presents itself as the negative of the world and its indispensable double”. The use of the notion is rather paradoxical in geography for that science’s subject of study is the world and its phenomenon and not its alleged opposite. However, the notion mostly suffers from a vague definition that makes it ineffective to describe the social, political, economic and, of course, spatial phenomenon that it supposedly refers to. By resorting to spatial modeling in order to decipher the world’s complexity and its underlying causes and mechanisms, Brunet ends up oversimplifying the realities of the world.
