O artigo serve de introdu o ao dossiê “Futebol e emigra o portuguesa”, proporcionando uma vis o comparativa das conclus es do projeto de investiga o internacional Diasbola, dedicado ao papel do futebol entre emigrantes portugueses e luso-descendentes de oito contextos diaspóricos. O objetivo foi caracterizar o futebol em compara o com outros elementos culturais utilizados pelos migrantes como meios de liga o ao seu país de origem, em processos de constru o de comunidade e performance de “portugalidade”. Partimos da hipótese de que o futebol, que constitui um importante fenómeno sociocultural na sociedade portuguesa, representa um elemento particularmente poderoso na vida cultural quotidiana dos emigrantes, bem como um ponto de referência crucial na liga o destes ao seu local de origem. Sustentados por material etnográfico, os resultados da investiga o confirmam claramente esta hipótese, mas contradizem a sua conota o algo restrita ou unilateral: embora a forma o social e as diversas fun es do futebol sejam moldadas por cada contexto diaspórico particular, este fenómeno proporciona também uma dinamica que dá forma a tais contextos e condi es. This paper serves as an introduction to the dossier “Football and Portuguese emigration” at providing comparative insights into the findings of the international research project Diasbola which analysed the role of football among Portuguese emigrants and luso-descendents in eight diasporic settings. The aim was to qualify football in comparison to other cultural elements which are used by migrants to connect to their country of origin, and in the invention and performance of Portugueseness and community-building processes. We had started with the hypothesis that football, which is a major cultural and social phenomenon in Portuguese society, represents an especially strong element in the emigrant’s culture of everyday life and is a crucial point of reference to their origins. Deriving from ethnographic material, results clearly confirm this hypothesis, but counter its somewhat encapsulating connotation: while football in its social formation and its possible functions is shaped by each particular diasporic context, it also provides dynamics which shape such contexts and conditions.
