Anticonvulsant Activity of Methanol Extract of Rhizomes of Cyperus tegetum Roxb.

The present study was carried out to evaluate the anticonvulsant effect of methanol extract of Roxb (MECT) in Swiss albino mice. The anticonvulsant effect of methanol extract at a dose of 250, 500, 750 and 1000 mg/kg bw were examined against pentylenetetrazole (PTZ, 80 mg/kg IP) and isoniazide (INH, 300mg/kg p.o) induced seizures and significantly delayed the onset and also antagonized the seizures indose dependent manner. Diazepam (2 mg/kg IP) was used as reference standard. The methanol extract at a dose of 1000 mg/kg IP produced66.66% protection in mice against PTZ-induced convulsion in mice and at a dose of 750 mg/kg IP of the extract produced 83.34% protectionagainst INH-induced convulsion in mice. The results obtained from this study indicate that the methanol extract of rhizome of may bebeneficial in both tonic and clonic seizures.
