Point-Prevalence Study Relating to Antibiotic Usage in Dr. Beh et Uz Children Hospital; Comparison of 2008 and 2012 Data

Objective: We aimed to determine the patterns of antimicrobial drug usage and appropriateness of antibiotic indications ratios in patients hospitalized in Dr. Behcet Uz Children’s Hospital on 15th January 2012.Material and Methods: A standard form was prepared and the demographic features such as age, gender and indications for antimicrobial selection, microbiological results, the dose and dosing intervals of the antimicrobial drug sand presence of pediatric infectious disease consultations were recorded in this form; and evaluated by a pediatric infectious disease specialist. The results were compared with the data of the 2008 study.Results: In this study, 159 (57.1%) of 278 patients had been under antimicrobial therapy. The inappropriate antimicrobial usage rate was 12.9% in pediatric wards, while it was 57.1% in surgical wards; and it was found to be statistically higher in surgical wards (p=0.000). The ratio of inappropriate antibiotic therapy was 12.3% in empirical therapy, whereas it was 87.7% in prophylaxis. In the patients who had been consulted by pediatric infectious disease specialist appropriate treatment was statistically higher (p=0.000). Conclusion: Rational antimicrobial use is the most important strategy for decreasing the development of antimicrobial resistance and lowering the cost of health care. Especially increasing the rates of consulations with the infectious disease specialist will be a factor for decreasing the inappropriate usage of antimicrobials. Creating prophylaxis guidelines by using local hospital data and international and national guidelines will decrease the problems in surgical wards. Periodically performed point-prevalence studies will provide information about the general status of the hospital and specify the probable problems in the hospital.
