REALIZACIóN DE LAS CONSONANTES FRICATIVAS ALVEOLARES EN LA CODA SILáBICA EN EL INGLéS (NIVEL BáSICO) DE HISPANOHABLANTES VENEZOLANOS

Many of the pronunciation errors in the English (L2) of native Spanish speakers (L1) are due to the transfer of features from the Spanish phonological system (González & Romero 2001, Chela-Flores, B. 1996). The pronunciation of coda alveolar fricatives represents one of the major difficulties for Spanish speakers learning English, since the inventory and the distribution of such phonemes differ in both languages. In English there are two alveolar fricative phonemes (/s/ and /z/), whereas in Spanish there is only one (/s/), with three allophonic variations ([s], [h] and ). This paper describes the realizations of coda alveolar fricatives in the English of Venezuelan Spanish speakers at a basic level. The sample consisted of 25 students from Universidad Simón Bolívar. Two reading tests were administered: one with words in isolation and the other with the same words within a sentence. Results provided evidence for the transfer of the Spanish phonological rules of /s/ and /z/-glotalization, /z/-devoicing, and /s/ and /z/-deletion. Muchos de los errores de pronunciación en el inglés (L2) de hablantes del espa ol (L1) se deben a la transferencia de rasgos del sistema fonológico del espa ol al inglés (González & Romero 2001, Chela-Flores, B. 1996). Entre las dificultades que enfrentan los hablantes del espa ol, aprendices del inglés, se destaca la pronunciación de las consonantes fricativas alveolares en la coda silábica, pues, tanto el inventario como la distribución de dichos fonemas, difieren en ambas lenguas. En el inglés existen dos fonemas fricativos alveolares (/s/ y /z/), mientras que en el espa ol de Venezuela sólo hay uno (/s/), con tres variantes alofónicas ([s], [h] y ). En este trabajo se describen las realizaciones de las consonantes fricativas alveolares en la coda silábica en el inglés de hispanohablantes venezolanos, pertenecientes al nivel básico. La muestra estuvo conformada por 25 estudiantes de la Universidad Simón Bolívar, a quienes se les aplicó dos tipos de instrumento de lectura que contenían los fonemas /s/ y /z/ en la coda silábica: uno de palabras aisladas y el otro con las mismas palabras en contexto oracional. Los errores cometidos evidenciaron la transferencia de las reglas fonológicas del espa ol: la glotalización ([h]) de /s/ y /z/, el ensordecimiento de /z/ y la elisión.
