REGISTROS ANDINOS AL MARGEN DE LA ESCRITURA: EL ARTE RUPESTRE COLONIAL ANDEAN NON-WRITTEN RECORDS: COLONIAL ROCK ART

Se propone que el arte rupestre fue un sistema de registro y comunicación andino que continuó en uso, con adaptaciones y cambios, durante el período colonial. Se pretende demostrar que, a pesar de algunos casos puntuales, el arte rupestre no era percibido por los espa oles como un sistema activo que permitiera expresar y hacer circular imágenes, significados y pensamientos. Fue la ausencia de una mirada colonizadora y, por ende, represiva, la que permitió que funcionara al margen de los sistemas europeos, en especial de la escritura, precisamente el sistema impuesto por los espa oles para los mismos fines. Thepaperproposes that rock art was a system used for recording and communicating in the Andes that continued in use, with some adaptations and changes, duríng the colonialperiod. It attempts to demonstrate that, except ín special cases, rock art was not perceived by the Spaniards as an active system that enabled the expressíon and círculatíon of ímages, meaníng and thoughts. It was the absence of a colonial-and therefore repressive-perspective that enabled the very system imposed by the Spanishfor those aims, to operate outside ofthe traditional European systems, especially written ones.
