Abstract:

LUCCA, L.; OLIVEIRA, F. R.; CARMINATTI, L. J. Test talk and thresholds metabolic transition during exercise. Brazilian Journal of Biomotricity. v. 6, n. 3, p. 174-184, 2012. The speech production difficult is used to control aerobic exercise intensity by the Talk Test method (Talk Test). The aim of the present study was to compare the Talk Test variables to metabolic thresholds during exercise. Thirteen male subjects performed an incremental cycle test to identify the first (LL1) and the second (LL2) metabolic transition thresholds, heart rate values (HR) and rates of perceived exertion (RPE). Subjects should recite two times a standard paragraph with 64 lyrics and chose one from 3 possible levels of comfortable speech production (Yes, Maybe or Not). For further analysis we took the last positive (Usim), last equivocal (Utalv) and first negative stages (PN) of this subjective perception. The power output (WLL2) and HR (FCLL2) at LL2 (169,5 ± 22,6W; 157 ± 14 bpm) were not significantly different to Utalv (178, 8± 30,3W; 161 ± 15 bpm) (p=0,195) and HR values were correlated (r=0,57; p<0,05). The power output (W-USim) and HR (FC-Usim) at Usim were significantly higher than WLL1 and lower than WLL2. PN values were significantly higher than all other Talk Test and metabolic thresholds values. Based on these results, we concluded that Talk Test can be used in this population to prescribe exercise, once it approaches the second metabolic transition threshold intensity.
