Au XIIe siècle, la région sud-ouest de la Baltique fut le théatre d’incessants conflits politico-religieux. Au Danemark, la figure illustre de saint Knud Lavard, duc de Schleswig, dont les prérogatives politiques furent brièvement étendues à l’aire slave en Mecklembourg, est caractéristique d’une idéologie royale dont l’expression prit la forme d’une théologie politique. La dynastie des Valdemar se réclamant de son lien de parenté avec saint Knud Lavard fonda le pouvoir du roi sur une imitation du Christ ; à l’image de celui-ci, saint Knud Lavard puis ses royaux descendants gouvernaient des peuples slaves, leurs vassaux, mais surtout des convertis. Au nom d’une politique de revendication de la conversion des Slaves, l’église danoise, au détriment de l’empire des Staufen, puise dans un registre liturgique les éléments de sophistication d’un discours au demeurant contr lé par la monarchie. During the 12th century, the south-west Baltic area was the scene of continual political and religious conflicts. In Denmark, the famous figure of saint Knud Lavard, duke of Schleswig, who briefly obtained political prerogatives in Slav’s area in Mecklenburg, characterises a royal ideology which writing’s expression took the form of a political theology. Valdemar’s dynasty, which invoked his kinship with saint Knud Lavard, founded the power of the king on a Christ’s imitation. Saint Knud Lavard and then his royal descent, reflecting Christ’s model, governed Slav peoples, their vassals and above all converts. Indeed, in the name of a politics claiming the conversion of the Slavs, the danish church, to the prejudice of Staufen empire, draws from liturgical register the elements to construct a sophisticated discourse which was controlled by the monarchy.
