La conversion peut-elle être une liberté ? Can conversion be a freedom ?

La conversion est une liberté du point de vue du droit dans les démocraties libérales. Il ne peut en aller autrement d’un point de vue juridique. Mais l’analyse du phénomène de la conversion montre à quel point il est complexe et ne saurait être rapporté à un acte purement individuel, libre et autonome. Le libéralisme politique doit prendre en considération cette complexité pour mieux défendre la liberté de se convertir, en tentant de trouver un point d’équilibre entre reconnaissance et protection de l’individu. In liberal democracies conversion is a freedom from the law’s point of view. From a legal perspective this is the only possibility. But the analysis of the phenomenon of conversion shows how complex it is and that it cannot only be considered as a mere individual, free, and autonomous act. For a better defense of freedom of conversion, political liberalism must take into consideration such a complexity, and try to find an equilibrium point between recognition and protection of the individual.
