LEGISLACIóN CIVIL O CANON ECLESIáSTICO? EL STATUS DE LOS OBISPOS MONOFISITAS EN LA HISTORIA ECLESIáSTICA De JUAN DE éFESO CIVIL LAW OR CHURCH CANON? SOME OBSERVATIONS ON THE STATUS OF THE MONOPHYSITE BISHOPS IN JOHN OF EPHESUS' CHURCH HISTORY

La política centralizadora justinianea en materia religiosa no sólo tuvo un fuerte impacto en la constitución de la Iglesia bizantina, sino que además afectó la manera en que los grupos religiosos disidentes, en particular los monofisitas, percibieron su relación con la monarquía cristiana. En este trabajo abordaremos algunos episodios de la Historia eclesiástica del obispo monofisita Juan de éfeso. Estos episodios reflejan una transformación en el status jurídico de los obispos monofisitas que se encuentra en relación con la reconfiguración de la autoridad episcopal y de la percepción de la disidencia religiosa en la legislación del siglo VI. Justinian's centralizing religious policy had a strong impact not only on the formation of the Byzantine Church, but also affected the way i which dissident religious groups, particularly the Monophysites, perceived their relationship with the Christian monarchy. This paper analyzes some episodes of the Ecclesiastical History of the Monophysite bishop John of Ephesus. These episodes reflect the shift in the legal status of the Monophysite bishops related to the transformation of the definition of episcopal authority and perception of religious dissent in the legislation of the sixth century.
