Evaluation of the Poisson's ratio from the 3D laser scanning dataKeywords: 3D laser scanning , Poisson’s ratio , engineering stress Abstract: To determine the Poisson’s ratio from a cylindrical compression specimen is a demanding issue in the case of a soft material specimen. In this paper a non-contact method based on the three-dimensional laser scanning technology, together with the CAD surface reconstruction, is presented. Evaluation of the Poisson’s ratio is based on the volumetric changes of a cylindrical compression specimen. It is also shown that the three-dimensional scanning approach can be used for evaluation of engineering stresses when exact cross sectional area of the specimen cannot be precisely determined by standard contact measuring equipment.
