Soqotra

L’ le de Socotra, avant-poste lointain des frontières de l'état yéménite dans l'Océan Indien, est une communauté de composition ethnique mélangée, qui a sa langue propre. Elle offre un cadre sociopolitique idéal pour l'étude des relations entre état et collectivité en termes de formation politique. La formation politique de Socotra s’est réalisée à travers une série d'actes d'intégration politique menés par les différents régimes politiques qui se sont succédés depuis la fin du xixe siècle. L'étude de ce processus est accompagnée d’un récit historique de la politique administrative de quatre différents régimes dotés de modes de gouvernement politique distincts et ayant des effets structurants sur la vie collective des Socotri-s. Soqotra Island, the remote border outpost of the Yemeni state in the Indian Ocean, is a community of mixed ethnic composition with a non-Arabic mother tongue. It offers an ideal socio-political context for the study of state-community relations in terms of polity formation as part of a political incorporation process. Polity formation in Soqotra occurred through a series of acts of political incorporation by a succession of political regimes from the late 19th century to the present. The study of this process is pursued through a historical narrative of the politics of administration of four different political regimes with their distinctive modes of polity regimentation and their structuring effects on Soqotrans’ communal life.
