Abstract:

Here,weconductedasurveytoexaminethediversity,distributionandhabitatassociationofsmallmammalsfromAugust2011toFebruary2012incorporatingbothwetanddryseasonsinAridtsyforest,AwiZone,Ethiopia.UsingShermanlivetrapsandsnaptrapsinfourrandomlyselectedtrappinggrids,namely,naturalforest,bushland,grasslandandfarmland,atotalof468individualscomprisingeightspeciesofsmallmammals(livetraps)and89rodentsofsixspecies(snaptraps)weretrappedin2352and1200trapnights,respectively.Thetrappedsmallmammalsincludedsevenrodentsandoneinsectivore:Lophuromysflavopuntatus(30.6%),Arvicanthisdembeensis(25.8%),Stenocephalemysalbipes(20%),Mastomysnatalensis(11.6%),Pelomysharringtoni(6.4%),Acomyscahirinus(4.3%),Lemniscomyszebra(0.2%)andthegreaterredmuskshrew(Crociduraflavescens,1.1%).Analysisshowedstatisticallysignificantvariationsintheabundanceandhabitatpreferencesofsmallmammalsbetweenhabitatsduringwetanddryseasons.
