Abstract:

Inthecurrentstudy,5-nydroxytryptamine(5-HT)andgastrin(GAS)cellsinthedigestivecanalsofRanachensinensistadpolesatdifferentdevelopmentalstageswereinvestigatedbyimmunohistochemistry.Resultsshowedthatthe5-HTcellswereonlydetectedintheduodenumbeforemetamorphosisbegan,andwereextensivelydistributedinthestomach,duodenum,smallintestine,andrectumthereafter,withthehighestcountsfoundintheduodenumandrectumwhenmetamorphosiswascompleted.TheGAScellswereonlydistributedinthestomachandduodenum,andonlyrarelydetectedintheduodenumbeforemetamorphosisbegan,butincreasedinthestomachduringmetamorphosisandshowedzonaldistributioninthegastricmucosawhenmetamorphosiswascompleted.Metamorphosisisacriticalperiodforamphibians,duringwhichstructuralandfunctionalphysiologicaladaptationsarerequiredtotransitionfromaquatictoterrestrialenvironments.Duringmetamorphosis,thedifferentiationsof5-HTcellsinthegastrointestinalcanalsoftadpolescouldfacilitatemucussecretionregulation,improvedigestivecanallubrication,andhelpwater-shortagefooddigestioninterrestrialenvironments.Conversely,GAScelldifferentiationsduringmetamorphosismightcontributetothedigestiveandabsorptivefunctiontransitionfromherbivoretoomnivore.
