Abstract:

The purpose of the article is to draw attention to a ceramic vessel found a few years ago in the area of the Roman colony Ulpia Oescus which was later bestowed upon Museum of National Crafts (Troyan). The newly discovered vessel has a crater-like form, an egg-shaped body and a cylindrical neck. The edge of its mouth is flat and curved outwards and upwards. The heavy ornate upper part of the crater has stamped ornaments in relief presenting different mythological gods and attributes. The depiction of vine sprigs along with grapes, bull’s head, dragon’s head, cantaros, snake, lizard and god Pan are well-known from a number of artefacts found in Lower Moesia, Thrace and Dacia. The analysis of the decoration and its comparison with similar vessels produced by the well-known ceramic centres suggests that the said crater was made in another, unknown to us, ceramic center situated in Lower Moesia
