Canadian guideline on HIV preexposure prophylaxis and nonoccupational postexposure prophylaxis for pharmacistsAbstract: Despite advances in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) treatment and prevention approaches over the past decade, a significant number of new HIV infections occur each year. At the end of 2016, estimates suggest that 63,000 people were living with HIV in Canada, of whom 14% were unaware of their HIV infection.1 Approximately 2200 people were newly diagnosed in 2016, and more than half (52%) of new HIV infections occurred in gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (MSM). Other populations in Canada where there is a higher rate of new HIV diagnoses include Indigenous people, people from HIV-endemic countries and people who inject drugs.
