Abstract:

Pictured are some of the liana seedling species that are increasing in abundance in El Yunque forest in the island of Puerto Rico. The associated study used a long‐term dataset of seedling plots and showed that drier years and more disturbed areas of the forest promote liana seedling proliferation. Our results have important implications for conservation in future climatic scenarios, where more frequent and severe droughts, together with increases in disturbance, could have a significant effect on seedling tropical communities by favoring lianas at the expense of trees. These photographs illustrate the article “Dry conditions and disturbance promote liana seedling survival and abundance” by María Natalia Uma?a, Jimena Forero‐Monta?a, Christopher J. Nytch, Jill Thompson, María Uriarte, Jess Zimmerman and Nathan G. Swenson, published in Ecology. https://doi.org/10.1002/ecy.255
