Rethinking socialism with Axel Honneth

The aim of the article is to develop some critical reflections about Honneth’s redefinition of socialism. Starting from Honneth’s theory, the article develops a vision of socialism as the theoretical and practical activity of transformation of all those modes of relation that, in the different spheres of social life, cause some individuals to be subjected to forms of exclusion and domination. But, according to Petrucciani, this is a vision of ‘socialist justice’ which has to be integrated by a socialist idea of the good life. From this point of view, socialism should aim not only at realizing equal opportunities for all individuals, but also at reducing to a (necessary) minimum the aspects of competition and antagonism between subjects and at promoting relations based on cooperation and solidarity
