Ketoacidosis – Where Do the Protons Come From?

Ketone bodies (acetoacetate, 3-hydroxybutyrate, and acetone) are produced under conditions that cause a high rate of fatty acid oxidation such as fasting, prolonged exercise, or a low carbohydrate diet. This is known as ketosis, and is generally regarded as normal and harmless
