Educational Problems of Syrian Refugee Students in Elementary Schools

Abstract:

Turkey has hosted Syrian people who are obliged to leave their countries because of the civil war in Syria since 2011. Almost the half of this migration is children. The determination of educational needs has an important position for the adaptation of Syrian children to their new environments and cultures. The aim of this research is to determine the educational problems of Syrian refugee students in elementary schools. The sample of the research consists of 19 classroom teachers and 6 guidance teachers who work at elementary schools and have Syrian refugee students in their schools/classrooms in Atasehir, Istanbul. Data of the study planned as qualitative design have been acquired by semi-structured interview technique. Content analysis method has been used for data analysis. Supervisiontechnique has been used for determining the consistency of codes and categories reached as a result of in-depth analysis. Therefore, a data set has been checked by an independent coder and there liabilitybetween two analyses have been calculated by Miles and Huberman formula and there liability co-efficient has been detected as 80.244. According to the findings of there search the most important problem in the education of Syrian students is language. Language problem affects their academic and affective developments in a negative way and complicates the determination of their needs in these fields. Therefore, the language problem should be resolved and permanent educational policies should be adopted and the curriculums should be developed or reviewed in that direction for being integrated of Syrian students to the society
