An Analysis of Religion and Film Studies in Turkey

Religion and film debate started in Turkey when cinematograph came to the Ottoman State. However, religion and film weren’t studied academically for many years. The first book was written in 1977 and 18 books have been published so far. The first MA thesis was written in 1986. And, between 1986 and 2019, only 31 MA theses and 12 Ph.D. dissertations were written. These dissertations mostly were produced primarily at a few universities and in departments such as sociology of religion and cinema-TV. The most popular topics were religious themes and representations of devout Muslims. The most popular methods were film reviews and literature reviews. Most of the academics who have written articles on religion and film are assistant professors. Generally, young academics prefer writing on religion and film.
