Nursing Students’ Attitudes Toward Lesbians and Gay and Affecting Factors

Abstract:

Background:Althoughhomosexuality is welcomedmorepositively in the 21st century, homosexuals are exposed to negative perception and negative practice by society through out the world. Objective: This study was conducted to determine the attitudes of the nursing students towards lesbians and gays and the factors affecting these attitudes. Method: The universe of the descriptive work was created by 192 students who went on to the Nursing Department of the Faculty of Health Sciences at Okan University. 162 (84.4%) students were sampled because they wanted to work on the universe to select the sample but because of the students who were absent from the data collection dates and did not want to participate in the study. Ethical committee approval was obtained before data collection was started; The data of the research were collected between 8-31 May 2017. The data were obtained by the questionnaire form for demographic characteristics and the "Attitudes Towards Lesbian and Glacier Attitudes (LGYT)" developed by Herek (1998) and conducted by the Turkish version of Duyan and Gelbal (2004) to determine the attitudes of individuals towards homosexuals. Number-percentage calculations, Kruskal Wallis test, Man Whitney U test, t test and Anova tests were used in the evaluation of the data. Results: It was found that 35.8% of the students were gay / lesbian individuals, 66% were gay / lesbian friends, 79% were not talking about gay / lesbians in their family and 40.1% of parents had negative opinions about gay / lesbian It has been identified. Of the students, 16% stated that they gave care to a gay / lesbian individual as a nurse and 87.7% stated that giving a gay / lesbian individual care was no different from giving care to other individuals. The average score of the students' scores on Lesbian and Deer Attitudes (LOS) scale was found moderate as 27,88 ± 9,28. The gender of the students, the class they attend, the socio-economic status of their family, the status of the gay / lesbian individual, the status of friendship with the gay / lesbian individual, the talk about gay / lesbian family, the parents' views towards gay / lesbian, There was a statistically significant relationship between the opinions of the donor and the LGIQ scale scores (p <0,05), and no significant relationship was found with other variables (p> 0,05). Conclusion: As a result of the study, it is suggested that nursing students should take a comprehensive approach to approaching individuals with different sexual preferences during training and educate them about their prejudices against these
