Hospitals in Intensive Care Units Experience and Anxiety-Depression Status

Abstract:

Introduction: Patients in the intensive care unit are faced with many stressful situations such as lack of privacy, inactivity, pain. Objectives: This study in intensive care unit for at least 24 hours of inpatient experiences and anxiety for patients in the intensive care unit was conducted in order to determine the cross-sectional state of depression. Method: This study was conducted with 52 volunteer patients over 18 years of age who were admitted to clinics for at least 24 hours in intensive care units of a university hospital between March-April 2016. Patient identification form, Intensive Care Experience Scale and Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale were used to collect data. Number, percentage, mean, standard deviation and chi-square test, Mann Whitney U test, Kruskal Wallis test were used in the evaluation of the data. Findings: It was determined that the average age of the participating patients was 56.84 ± 7.94, 84.6% were married, 40.4% were primary school graduates, 32.2% were housewives and 94.6% had a social insurance. The mean duration of stay in the intensive care unit was 79.42 ± 62.37/hour (min: 2, max: 336) and 63.5% of the patients had other patients. There is a significant relationship between the age groups of the patients and the mean scores of the emotional and depression subscale scores experienced by other patients (p≤0.05). Conclusion: As a result of our study, it was seen that the age of the patients, the frequency of intensive care and hospitalization, and the feelings they experienced when they saw other patients were associated with anxiety and depression
