A Study on Laser Processing of Ceramic Surface

Abstract:

In this study, laser processing processes of alumina ceramics were investigated. The effect of laser power and processing speed on alumina samples was investigated in this laser treatment procedure. The main benefits of laser processing are flexibility, high speed, high precision and good quality. In addition, ceramics are hardly processed by conventional methods due to their high hardness and brittleness. CO2 laser processing alumina ceramics were analyzed for the effect of output power, process speed parameters. Mark width, sign depth, and contrast were evaluated and the output power determined both the sign depth and width. Higher power, resulting in deeper and wider markings characterized by high contrast. The processing speed controls overlapping stains and the duration of the laser-material interaction, thus having an effect on the depth and contrast of the markers. The study explained that high output forces are required to produce deep lines and that, with low processing speeds, high output forces become clear as the most suitable parameters for achieving a satisfactory quality width and depth during engraving.
