Abstract:

Although Orientalism is an academic discipline established by Western societies to recognize Eastern cultures and languages, it also includes power and power relations. Orientalism, as Edward Said describes, is a system of thought that is based on prejudices and enables the hegemony of the Western on the Eastern. Orientalism, which is also regarded as the East image that the West has devised, has seen itself in many field since ancient times. Orientalism may seen from literature, music, painting and architecture. Orientalism is also seen in the cinema. In addition to being an art form, cinema is a mass media tool and has a social feature. Therefore there is a strong link between cinema and social life. The orientalist view can be reproduced on the society through cinema, where audiovisial elements can be used effectively. Orientalist viewpoint has many examples in the cinema. The Physician (2013) is one of these examples. The Physician (2013) is a drama/history genre film directed by Philipp St?lzl in 2013. The film narrate the Rob Cole’s (film character) journey from London to Isfahan in order to receive medical education from Ibn-i Sina and subsequent events. Orientalist elements are often seen throughout the film, in this context, the aim of this study, orientalist elements in the The Physician (2013) film, is reveal through content analysis
