Abstract:

After the Great War, the US policies towards the Middle East, which was shaped through various treaties, particularly focused on economic interests through American oil companies. However, the world order formed after the World War II engaged the USA in the region not only for economic concerns, but also for security reasons. Thus, the World War II can be considered to be a turning point for American full-scale intervention in the Middle East. This study seeks to analyse the US policies towards the region during the Cold War era in the theoretical framework of Securitization theory. As securitizations are basically results of speech acts, the discourse analysis is the basic methodology to examine the speeches and doctrines of the then-US presidents and administrators. From these speeches and doctrines, it can be argued that the US administrations securitized all anti-western interventions in the region. While American economic interests, the western ideology and the security of the state of Israel were considered as referent objects, the potential challenges that could affect the oil supply from the region to the western world were labelled as existential threats
