Determination of Water Loss and Leak in ？anl？urfa City

With water shortages around the world, studies on reducing water losses have been increasing recently. In our country, the importance of water losses is understood and regulations related to the reduction of water losses have been published by the Ministry of Forestry and Water Affairs in 2014. The municipalities are required to work according to this regulation and to reduce the water losses to the levels specified in the regulation within a certain period of time. In line with this regulation, a study was carried out by Sanliurfa Water and Sewerage Works between the period of 7/2015 - 6/2016 for the determination of water losses in Sanliurfa province and water balance study was conducted. As a result of the water balance study, losses in the network were observed to be well above the desired levels. In the measurements and investigations carried out during the study period, it was determined that the amount of 76 132 363 m3 of water supplied to the drinking water network, approximately 37 640 615 m3 (49.5%) part was lost. The majority of the losses occurred in the network is 24 078 685 m3’ (31.5%) amounted to the result of physical leaks. The high level of physical leaks is due to the fact that the network is operated at high pressures up to 130 m, well above the 60 m specified in the regulation. The results show that pressure management is very important in the network, in this direction, 108 district metered areas were arranged for the drinking water network and 85 district metered areas were designed to use pressure breaker valves
