A Research for Emoji Use Trends of the Generation Z on Written Communication Via Smart Phones

Today people can instantly convert everything they think into a message, transmit it by channels and to any receivers they want and receive a reply to it in a very short time. People who are searching for a solution to the speed of communication and able to access more technological opportunities are looking for ways to shorten the time they spend to write. Oft-used of emoji which is one of the latest invention of the people who are competing with time and has almost meant a new digital language is supposed to produce a message with a single touch rather than embodying a written message. In this study, which was designed to learn the tendencies of the generation Z, who are also called digital generation, about using emoji in written communication via smartphones, the results of the in-depth interview with 27 High School students will be evaluated. The aim of the study is to learn the opinions of the generation who were born and have grown up in technology age about the place of emojis in fast communication cycle and to draw attention to the existence of a digital hybrid language consisting of emojis and words. The participants’ experiences and recommendations regarding the use of emoji were also evaluated. The different point of view resulting from this study is supposed to contribute to the development of the new language which was produced to meet the needs of the technology age and spreading rapidly
