Metaphoric Perceptions of Pre-Service Science Teachers on Art in Scientific Activities

Abstract:

Scientific activities are one of the applications that are frequently encountered in science courses and daily life. These activities are quite positive for the introduction of STEM, which is an important topic in recent years, to the field of science education field. STEM provides an educatione opportunity with an interdisciplinary approach to students. With the inclusion of art education in STEM (STEM + A or STEAM), students develop and organize scientific activities with an artistic approach. Thus, the aim of the present study was to determine the metaphorical perceptions of pre-service science teachers about art in scientific activities. The study was developed with the phenomenological approach, a qualitative research method. The study sample included pre-service teachers attending F?rat University, Department of Science Education. The data were collected with a form where pre-service teachers completed the statement “Science activities are like the art of ………., because ………”. Research data were analyzed by interpreting the student responses with the content analysis method. Collected data were organized to determine the main themes. The analysis was conducted by considering the similarities and the resemblance rate of the metaphors obtained from the students. The percentages and frequencies of these themes were determined and metaphorical perceptions of pre-service science teachers about art in science activities were identified
