Abstract:

The primary objective of this study is the comparison of the anxiety of university students in the statistics department at a state university towards their examinations, one of the essential academic activities, with regard to gender, school year, internship and training mode (formal or evening). This study is an observational and descriptive study by its design. With this purpose, data collected from 274 students were used, 183 of which studying at the formal training and 91 studying at the evening training program in all four years of Dokuz Eylül University Faculty of Sciences Statistics Department. A personal information form and an anxiety scale were used as data gathering tools in the study. Also the descriptive statistics, i.e., independent two-sample t-test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), chi-square analysis, odds ratio, ROC curve, sensitivity and specificity statistics and logistic regression analysis were used. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was found to determine the reliability of the anxiety scale. While the gender variables are not significant for the general anxiety score, training mode, internship and school year are statistically significant according to the t-test and analysis of variance. The cut-off point for the general anxiety score was found 90 using ROC curve and sensitivity-specificity tests, which could be considered as an important contribution of this study to the literature.
