Abstract:

In this study, the police stations in Bursa during the Ottoman period are examined in terms of their facilities such as physical structure, personnel, weapons-equipment, means of transportation/communication, and their sense of mission and efforts for ensuring public order. In general, in this study covering the beginning of the 20th century, the documents of the Ottoman Archives of the Prime Ministry and second-hand sources were used. At the end of the study, it is stated that the presence of police in Bursa could be traced back until the year 1886 and that the title of a chief police officer which was originally Senior Sergeant was prooted to Chief Commissioner on October 20, 1908. It is also stated that the number of police stations was 12 as of 1912 and although they suffered from many deficiencies they were successful in determining the risks threatening the city's public order and removing them, and that they also acted strictly on complaints from the citizens towards their staff and operated the necessary legal processes
