Antibiotic Usage of Hospitalised Patients in Two Hospitals in K?r?kkale: A One Day Point Prevalence StudyKeywords: Antibiyotik,K?r?kkale,nokta prevalans,uygunsuz antibiyotik kullan?m?,K?r?kkale Abstract: Objective: Antibiotics are among the mostly used drugs worlwide. Inappropriate antibiotic usage leads to antibiotic resistance and economical losses. In this study, it is aimed to evaluate the inappropriate antibiotic usage rates and factors that effect this, in two hospitals in Kirikkale. Material and Method: The study was conducted in one state hospital and one university hospital in Kirikkale by using point prevalence method. Occupancy rates of hospitals, and antibiotics used on the study day were recorded. The appropriateness of the antibiotic usage was evaluated by the infectious disease specialists of our study group. SPSS 15.0 program was used for statistical analysis. Results: There were 443 hospitalized patiens in two hospitals and 221 of them were under antibiotic therapy. The antibiotic therapies were initiated empirically in 92.8% and according to culture results in 7.2% of the patients. The overall antibiotic appropriateness rate was 61.9% (221/137). The antibiotics were mostly initiated for therapy. The appropriateness rate was 73.5% for patients using antibiotics for therapy and 19.1% for patients using for prophylaxis and the difference was statistically significant (p<0.001). Infectious diseases specialist consultation was requested for only 53 patients and consultations increased the aprropriateness rates of antibiotic usage. The rate of inappropriate antibiotic usage was higher in the surgical clinics than the others. Conclusion: According to our results we conclude that infectious diseases specialist consultation is essential before initiating antibiotic therapy
