THE ROLE OF LOCAL GOVERNMENTS IN THE PROCESS OF SOCIAL HARMONIZATION: EXAMPLES OF GOOD PRACTICES FOR IMMIGRANTS, ASYLUM SEEKERS AND REFUGEES FRIENDLY CITIES

In the 21st century, the world becoming a "global village", especially as a result of globalization and neoliberal developments, increases the likelihood and proportion of people to live together with different ethnic, cultural, religious, linguistic and social characteristics. In this study, three different good practice examples will be examined, organized and/or supported by local governments in three different countries. One of these best practice examples is the practice in Boston, USA, called as "Boston Back Street Program". The other is the "A Charter of Rights for Urban Citizens" document produced and disseminated by the municipal council in Montréal, Canada. The last example of these good practices is the "Haus am Sandberg" elderly care center, which was established in 1997 in Duisburg, Germany, but is also supported by the municipality. When these examples of good practice are examined, it is observed that all stakeholders sharing the same social area live in mutual harmony. It is foreseen that these developments will have positive effects on the cultural, economic and political developments of the countries in time
