Pre-Service Science Teachers’ Skills and Experience on Designing Educational Games: A Case Study

Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to investigate pre-service science teachers’ skills and experience on designing educational games. Holistic single case approach – one of the qualitative research methods – was used in this study. Research sample consists of 57 pre-service teachers enrolled in the 3rd year science teaching program at Eskisehir Osmangazi University in year 2017. As a quantitative data collection tool researchers used a four-dimensional rubric to evaluate the educational games. In addition, the researchers also prepared semi-structured questions to interview with 18 pre-service science teachers. The interviews revealed that designing and evaluating the educational games have promoted the pre-service teachers’ science teaching skills on a given subject matter. However, they encountered with some difficulties before writing the educational game scenarios, such as finding a subject matter, selection of the appropriate materials, etc
