An Action Research on Teaching History Subjects With Active Learning Model in Primary School 4th Grade Social Studies Lesson

Abstract:

Social Studies is a field of study combining art, literature and social sciences with an interdisciplinary approach in order to provide citizenship qualifications to students based on collective teaching approach. History, which is one of these fields, is perceived by many students as lessons in which places, dates and names are memorized. Therefore, it is seen as a boring lesson that is not related to students’ lives. Explaining the past events to the students in an abstract way causes the students not to show the desired interest in this course and to create awareness about historical issues. Instead of a content in which the individual has difficulty in establishing a relationship and cannot carry it into his / her daily life; history education in social studies content will become more functional and enjoyable with an activity-oriented curriculum. In this context, the aim of the research is to arouse interest in history subjects in the 4th grade social studies course by means of active learning model which means the development of their own behavior by analyzing, synthesizing and evaluating the knowledge acquired in the learning process; Milli Mücadele and the background is to learn hidden heroes. The research was designed as an action research. The data were collected from 4th grade students of an elementary school in Eski?ehir. Data collection tools used; semi-structured interviews, video recordings and student diaries. Descriptive analysis, one of the qualitative data analysis techniques, was used to analyze the data. As a result of the research; It was observed that the social studies course, which was conducted with active learning, enabled the students to participate in the course more and reached the aim determined in the process of arousing historical awareness, understanding the Milli Mücadele and empathic approach to the hidden heroes and events that lived in that period
