Relationship between Life Values and Gender Roles Attitudes of University Students

Abstract:

Objective: This study was conducted to determine the relationship between gender roles attitudes and life values of university students. Methods: The population of the study carried out 444 students studying in the nursing department of a university in the Black Sea region. 306 volunteer nursing students were included in the study. The data of the study were collected by questionnaire, the Gender Roles Attitude Scale (GRAS) and the Life Values Scale (LVS). Results: Most of the students (73.5%) were female, 31% of them were in the secondgrade. It was found that 85.9% of the students were taken decisions of the family, 96.4% of them were concerned about their own decisions in the family. The mean score of total GRAS was 140.12 ± 19.97. The mean score of the LVS was 60.16 ± 9.17. GRAS and all subscales with LVS were higher in female students than male students and the differences were statistically significant (p=0.000). As the class of students progressed, the female gender role subscale scores increased and the difference was statistically significant (p=0.014). There were significant positive correlations between LVS and GRAS and its subscales “egalitarian gender role”, “gender role in marriage”, “traditional gender role” and “male gender role”. Conclusion:There was a significant positive correlation between gender role attitudes and life values of students. It was found out that the gender role of female students wasmore egalitarian than male students and their living values were higher than male students. It is recommended to continue education on on gender roles and life values
