A STUDY OF MEDICAL MALPRACTICE INSURANCE IN TURKEY

In Turkey motor liability insurance has the biggest part of the liability insurance premiums. The regulatory can release some compulsory liability insurances according the public benefits and necessity. Thus increase the variety of liability insurance types. Medical malpractice liability insurance is one of those. Medical malpractice insurance, which has an old history in the World, is quite new in the in our country. It has been compulsory since 2010. With in years the regulatory made some changes in coverage limits, nevertheless premiums are stabil since the first day. Because of rising numbers of claims and amounts of damages, this profitable insurance become less profitable. The purpose of this study is to investigate the last situation of the compulsory medical malpractice insurance in Turkey. The numbers of total premiums and claims have been analyzed. With a survey study doctors opinions have been collected, classified according their working place, title and practice years. Results are show that doctors believe this insurance necessity and support to develope. They declare due to insurance they feel better in their practice. But to make it sustained, it is necessary to regulate premiums and coverage. It’s also need to create cooperation between insurers, doctors unions and regulatory
