A STUDY ON THE COURTYARD FEATURES OF THE TRADITIONAL HOUSES OF ANTAKYAKeywords: Geleneksel evler,avlu,koruma,Antakya Abstract: The large garden openings in the middle of the buildings, which can be open or closed, are called courtyards. In Turkish architecture, courtyards are open to the sky and open to the sky and it is one of the most important parts of social and cultural life. Antakya's courtyard houses, most of which belong to the 18th and 19th centuries, are the most important places reflecting the social and cultural life of Antakya. However, there are some difficulties in protecting and transferring these houses to future generations. These houses, which have preserved their original characteristics to a large extent until recent years, have either been abandoned or largely underwent structural changes due to population growth and distorted urbanization. The fact that the new developments are destroying the past and developing in an unhealthy and unidentified way constitutes a big problem for the field. The correct investigation and determination of the cultural accumulation of Antakya with modern methods is one of the problems to be solved. Therefore, within the scope of this study, the traditional houses and courtyard structures of Antakya were examined and it was concluded that the courtyard was the place that offers the most rational solutions in terms of climate and sociocultural for the people of the region. As a result, in this study it is emphasized that conservation and sustainability of courtyard houses should be maintained, evaluated in current usage, and nowadays it is necessary to create courtyard houses with these qualifications
