The Frequency of Fall in Geriatric Syndromes

Abstract:

Aim: Falls, which may lead to morbidity and mortality are an important health issue for older adults. Polypharmacy, exertion dyspnea, depression, chronic pain, cognitive dysfunction, urinary incontinence are among the many etiologic factors that are related to falls. The aim of this study is to evaluate the incidence of geriatric syndromes in geriatric patients with a history of fall injuries. Material and Methods: Three-hundred patients with a history of falls who are over 60 years of age with were included. Data regarding to their demographics, chronic diseases, and medications was collected retrospectively to include in the prevalence analysis. Results: Amog the 300 patients, 45% were 55-75 years old and the remaining 55% were over 75 years of age. Two-hundred and fifteen patients were female (71.7%) and 85 were male (28.3%). The most common geriatric syndrome that was observed in patients with a history of falls was polypharmacy followed by urinary incontinence and chronic pain. Conclusions: Multiple etiologic factors are included in the pathogenesis of the falls. As for that comprehensive geriatric assessment for every patient is necessary. Avoiding polypharmacy is especially important to reduce the risk of falls
