The Reasons for Choosing the Career of the Nursing Students and their Perceptions Of Care Behaviours

This study was conducted as a descriptive study to determine the reasons of carreer choise and perception of caring behaviors of nursing students. The sample of the study consisted of 673 first, second, third and fourth grade nursing students who agreed to participate in the study year 2016-2017. In the collection of data, Student Identification Form, Vocational Choice Scale in Nursing and Caring Behaviors Inventory-24 (CBI-24) were used. The mean age of the student nurses included in the study was 20.83±1,74 and 70.9% were female. 37.1% of the students stated that they give care to the average of two patients in clinical practice, 40.1% of them spent 15-30 minutes on average, 41.8% of that they measurement of vital signs and 35.4% of them had the most oral care. It was determined that Caring Behaviors Inventory-24 total mean score of the student nurses is 5.03±0.75. It was found that mean score of the sub-dimensions of the inventory is 5.09±0.78 for being respectful dimension, 5.05±0.80 for assurance dimension, 4.98±0.82, for knowledge and skill dimension and 4.98±0.80 for connetedness dimension, respectively. Vocational Choice Scale in Nursing total mean score is 6.53±1.53. A positive moderate level correlation was found between the total score of the Vocational Choice Scale in Nursing and total score of caring behaviors inventory-24. Care behaviors inventory total scores were found to be significantly higher in female students (p:0.015). It was determined that the students chose the nursing profession most "desire to help". The concluded that student nurses' perception of caring behaviors was higher, that female students preferred nursing profession more than male students and that students chose the profession with most “desire to help”
