Approaches On Sustainability in Fashion Design Education

The textile and fashion industry’s wide impact of production and consumption has been considered together with sustainability and additionally, education has emerged as an important criteria in last years following the basic three elements of sustainable development. In this study, it was aimed to determine the sustainability approaches in fashion design education towards the negative results caused by the fashion industry. In this context, a field research that included interviews conducted with faculty members and students in the related field in three universities in Turkey and in two foreign universities was conducted, and online interviews were conducted with a foreign university to collect the study data. By adopting phenomenology for this study, it is aimed to understand how sustainability is perceived in fashion design education. For the research, interviews were conducted with academics and students at universities and data were obtained by collecting the documents and participating observations. Thus, the context in which the subject was examined and discussed were analyzed. In this article, the argument of the necessity of thinking sustainability education holistically and the need of a strategic approach of the educational institutions for sustainability are presented with the findings of the study
