Abstract:

Hardfacing is a method that is accepted and used in many production sectors today. There are wide range of applications from food to agriculture, from mining to chemistry. We can explain the reason of preference of this method briefly as improvement of material properties at low cost. It is used in hot forging molds of a forging industry, in order to improve the properties of the deformed areas either for the purpose of modification or for the pre-strengthening of areas that may deform. In this study, it was aimed to improve the mold life and properties by coating with Fe based Thermo Dur named welding electrode to 1.2714 hot work tool steel surface. Firstly Thermo Dur named electrode is coated with TIG welding method on surface. Then samples were taken from the welded die for the examinations. The samples were analyzed due to its hardness, microstructure, SEM, EDS, XRD, wear (used pin on disc method) and weight loss properties respectively. Some materials properties have been obtained using JMatPro program. The data obtained at the end of these analyses were interpreted in comparison with the data in the articles found during the literature review. As a result, it was seen that the filling material worn 1.5 times less than the die steel. It is thought that this is caused by the fact that the filler material is harder than the hot work tool steel. The difference in hardness is thought to originate from the carbide-forming elements contained in the filler material. In the filling material, carbide-forming elements such as Cr and V are more abundant than the die steel. After the wear test was completed, the weight of the filler material decreased, while the weight of the tool steel increased. This is thought this situation occurs due to adhesion
