The Necessity of Land Consolidation in Irrigation Projects: A Case Study in Daphan Irrigation Project/Turkey

Abstract:

Land consolidation is one of the measures in order to decrease of irrigation project investment and increase of irrigation benefits. The investment cost has increased because the canals and roads taking place in the scope of irrigation project get longer more than adequate along parcel borders in the areas where the parcels are small and misshaped. In the area where applied irrigation project since agricultural lands are very small, multipartite and scattered there are so many problems in terms of applying modern irrigation technic and methods. However the important majority of irrigation areas couldn’t benefit from irrigation, drainage and transport systems. The amount of yield is low because of consequential problems in the irrigation. In addition, expected result don’t be able to get in the irrigation Project even though the important part of culture technic measures such as farm irrigation, land levelling, drainage and rood services were applied. In order to get expected yield increase in the irrigation project where the lands are very small, multipartite and scattered, it is required to prepare and then apply to land consolidation. In this study, it was examined the effect of land consolidation on the expected results from irrigation in Daphan Plain. Daphan Irrigation Project had been designed with purpose of irrigation to Daphan Plain where located in Eastern Anatolian. It was started irrigation in 1995 and construction works has been continued. The consolidation ratio was determined 62%, which indicated that land consolidation is desired level
