Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to determine the convenience of aerobic tests which are used to evaluate VO2max of junior basketball players. 15 junior male basketball players voluntary participated to this study, however; 13 participant (14.78±0.41 year-old with the height 186.23±5.90 cm, weight 73.84±9.09 kg, Body fat percentage 10.30 ± 4.67 %, training age 5.54 ± 0.78 year) completed all measurement procedure. The VO2max was measured with gas analyzer during the incremental test on motorized treadmill. During the Multi-Stage Fitness Test (MSFT), Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test Level I (YIRT1) and Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test Level II (YIRT2) total distance, maximum heart rate (maxHR) were recorded then predicted VO2max values were calculated. All tests were performed with 48 hours intervals. Before all tests subjects lied supine position for 5 minute to record resting heart rate (restingHR). There was very large correlation between VO2max, MSFT and YIRT2 performance (r = 0.88 and r = 0.78, respectively), also large correlation was found between VO2max and YIRT1 performance (r = 0.66). This study concludes that all three field tests have a significant relation with VO2max and treadmill performance, but MSFT and YIRT2 are more appropriate than YIRT1 for determining VO2max and endurance level of elite young male basketball players. Only YIRT1 can be suitable for determining endurance performance
