Brutalist Architecture and Sculpture: David Umemoto’s Sculptures

Abstract:

The notion of industrial revolution and the resulting modernity created important effects in the field of architecture as well as art movements. In the early 20th century, the main motivation of the field of architecture was there construction of the cities after the worldwar. In architectural designs, the details and ornaments that have come to the fore in the previous periods have been replaced by concepts such as simplicity, integrity and functionality. In general, the Brutal architecture can be defined as an architectural trend that emerged in Europe after the 1950s and use draw materials such as steel and glass in an approach that uses concrete as a basic material but which improvesits boundaries. The study deals with the relation ship between the brutalist architecture and sculpture, which is one of the important trends in the field of architecture after modernism. This relationship will be evaluated with in the frame work of basic design partnerships in both fields such as material, form, rhythm and texture. In this context, the works of David Umemoto, who produced architectural sculptures and considered as brutalist, will be examined
