A Relation Between Basic Human Values and Life Satisfaction: The Case of Sivas Cumhuriyet University

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between life satisfaction and basic human values among university students. Based on Schwartz's Theory of Values, this study utilized the “Portrait Values Questionnaire” and “The Life Satisfaction Scale.” 342 students in Sivas Cumhuriyet University participated in the research that utilized survey model. “Proportionate Stratified Sampling Technique” and “Random Sampling Technique” were used to determine the sampling. SPSS was used to analyze the data obtained. In the analysis of the data, frequency and percentage distributions were presented. In addition to this, Mann-Whitney U Test and The Pearson Moments Correlation Coefficient Test were used. According to the findings, the most widely adopted value by the students was the conservation value. This was followed by the self-transcendence value. The life satisfaction level of students was found to be high. There was a positive but weak relationship between life satisfaction and openness to chance, conservation and self-enhancement values.
