What Then? The D？sengagement of the United Kingdom from the EU and Alternat？ve Paths in the Post-Brexit Era

With the Article 50 of the Treaty of Lisbon the member states of the European Union (EU) are bestowed the right to leave the Union. The process of Brexit initiated by the referendum held in the United Kingdom (UK) in 2016 obliged the UK to leave the EU and with this experience, the UK became the first member state quitting the Union. The campaigns during the referendum process focused on the issues like increasing number of internal migrants, the EU's burdensome economic regulations, and the national sovereignty limited by the Union. Brexit has been the most important milestone in the history of the relations between the EU and the UK. This study deals with the historical background of this milestone and its causes. In addition, the models regulating the relations between non-member states are examined in order to discuss a suitable model for the UK in the post-Brexit era. In conclusion, none of the models (Norway, Switzerland, Canada, and WTO) will solve the problems of the UK and emphasized the Brexit process will negatively affect the UK and other EU members in economic and political terms
