Nakshi Sheikh Kazancizade Emin Edib Efendi (The Enlightened Scholar from Province of Sivas) - His Life, Works and Understanding of Wahdat al-Wujud

Abstract:

Kazanc?zade Emin Ed?b Efendi is one, who grew up in Sivas and lived in the last period of the Ottoman Empire, of the significant intellectuals. Emin Ed?b Efendi whose family resided in Bukhara, served as a teacher in Sivas Military Middle School for many years and was a member in the Ottoman Parliament for two terms. Apart from his official duties, Emin Ed?b Efendi was a follower of the sect ‘Nak?bend?’ and his tariqa chain reached to Mevlana Halid-i Ba?dad? through his sheikh Muhammed Kemah?. Emin Ed?b Efendi taught the true way for twenty-three years after the death of his sheikh Muhammad Kemah? in 1313/1896. Emin Ed?b Efendi's religious and sufi approaches were based on the prominent figures in the field of sufism such as Imam al-Ghazali, Abdulkadid Ghailani, Mevlana Celaledd?n-i R?m?, Muhyiddin ?bnü'l-Arab?, Ibn al-Far?z, Mahmud ?ebüster?, Abdurrahman Cam? and ?smail Hakk? Bursev?. Emin Ed?b Efendi, who was heavily influenced by the Ekber? Irfan (wisdom) tradition, accepted the wahdat-i wujud ‘as the summit of spiritual education and the tawhid’ (oneness of God). In his poems, Emin Ed?b Efendi, intensely chanting divine love and wahdat-i wujud, is a scholar in zahiri (outward) sciences besides his Sufi identity. In this regard, he got into the dilemma of zahir-batin (outward-inward sciences) and madrasa-tekke in his personality. Emin Ed?b Efendi, who was proficient in Arabic and Persian to write his works in those languages, gave a special importance to the education of individuals and trained his followers considering the good morality
