Abstract:

the skin color of the potato (solanum tuberosum l.) is a trait of easy evaluation, which could be used as a genetic marker in breeding programs, provided its association with other characteristics, mainly tuber quality traits, were confirmed. the objective of this study was to identify the degree of association between potato skin color with tuber dry matter content and chips color. clones from six biparental crosses among six commercial cultivars with yellow and red skin and six potato commercial varieties were evaluated for two years. results showed that genotypes differed for both tuber dry matter content and chip color. tests indicated no significant association of tuber skin color with tuber dry matter content and chip color. it was concluded that potato skin color has no association with tuber quality traits and should not be considered as a morphological marker for selection of superior genotypes for tuber quality traits.
