Abstract:

this study analyses the knowledge and the traditional use of two species of american origin, which are gradually being forgotten in the guatape municipality (antioquia, colombia): petaco bean, also known in spanish as ?vida? (phaseolus coccineus) and the ?maravilla? (phaedranassa sp.). the article also evaluates their nutritional potential in the context of a peasant?s economy that has been radically altered and impacted on by the construction of the power plant ?hidroelectrica del río nare? in 1973. the displacements of peasants towards the hills, the changes in the soil composition, and the tendencies of the economic shifts towards tourism, have forced farmers to modify their cultivation patterns and to accept new technological kits to improve production. this fact has negatively impacted the diversity of the local agro-ecosystem as well as the health of the local inhabitants and the region?s environmental conservation. both species studied in this research have an agroecological and nutritional value equal to that of potatoes and brown beans which have recently established themselves as staples in the local peasants? diet.
